THE WORSHIPFUL COMPANY OF MANAGEMENT CONSULTANTS

What is a Management Consultant?

The overall mission of the management consultancy profession is to help necessary change in business and in the wider community to happen more quickly, effectively and with more certainty of delivering results.

Management consultants may come from a number of disciplines such as strategy, IT, operations, management development, HR, change management and so forth. The consultancy profession globally is dominated by a small number of very large global firms, with national or regional organisations forming a second tier.

The developed world economies typically support a very large number of very small firms/sole practitioners. Traditionally all the major global firms have originated from the US or Europe, but there is now a growing trend, especially in IT, for Indian firms to be entering global markets.

World class and fit for the future

Management consultants assist organisations to adapt and to change to be more successful. This goal is achieved through a variety of interventions from advice on strategy matters, to help with people issues, design and implementation of operational improvements and the planning and delivery of technology capabilities. The Company would be pleased to provide any input on these matters required by the Lord Mayor.

Management consultants are also familiar with helping in planning for and anticipating the future. They are frequently used to assist organisations (and extensively used by a number of companies in the City) in assessing future scenarios and their impact. This is often backed up by market research and data from other assignments. The Company would be pleased to make the skills and knowledge of its Members available to the Lord Mayor in this field.

Management consultants are involved in education and training to develop executives who can deal with issues of global competitiveness and success. The Company has a very close association with the Sir John Cass Business School where we have helped found the Centre for Charity Effectiveness to address these issues in the not-for-profit sector.

Country Issues

Management consultancy is an emerging discipline in most of the countries that the Lord Mayor is planning to visit. It is a profession that can accelerate the development of new and emerging economies by providing deep expertise on an ‘as needed’ basis. London, especially the financial services sector, makes significant use of consultancy services to improve business performance. The Company would be delighted to provide any support to visits by the Lord Mayor where the issue of access to technical, management and change expertise are important issues.
